About us

Hello and thanks for taking the time to read our story! My name is Rusty Craig and I’m the founder of Eosinophilic Esophagitis Resource. After struggling all my life with difficulty swallowing I was finally diagnosed with EoE just last year at the age of 30.

My first symptoms of Eosinophilic Esophagitis showed up at age 7 when I got an Amway Double D vitamin stuck in my throat. Looking back it could have been because those things are like horse pills but who knows. I can remember frequent severe stomach aches as a child and certain foods like chicken or eggs made my throat hurt. Tomatoes made my tongue tingle and my parents thought I was crazy =)

By the time I was 13 I started noticing that swallowing was becoming more difficult. My dad used to travel for work and I can remember eating only bread and tomato soup during the week out of fear that I would choke and no one would be around. By the way where did that show “Rescue 911″ go? I used to love that show…

I got my first scope at 17. My esophagus had rings that were so constricting that they could barely get the scope down. I had to go back 6 months later for a 2nd dilation. After the upper GI scope I was diagnosed with…….. GERD! I supposedly had acid reflux but no one knew what was causing it. Just take these proton-pump inhibitors FOREVER and you’ll be fine. After a month of meds I quit taking them because there wasn’t an improvement in my symptoms. The dilation helped with my swallowing problem, but after a few years my symptoms came back full force.

At age 22 I got another scope and dilation with a different GI specialists who diagnosed me with GERD again. At 28 I started getting allergy shots with a specialist to control my hay fever. At this point in time I had never even heard of EoE but was suspecting that food allergies may be related to my trouble swallowing. So I made an appointment with the allergy specialist and asked him a simple question; “Can food allergies cause problems swallowing?” He said not likely it sounds like GERD so you should see a GI specialists.

Here’s where the fun begins. I decided to take matters into my own hands and bought the book “No more heartburn” which had a very strict diet to follow that would supposedly cure any gastrointestinal problems. Excited and ready to be cured I started on my new miracle diet. Turns out I was allergic to nearly every food in the diet and within a week my symptoms worsened 10 fold. I knew at that point that what I had was definitely not GERD.

Desperate to find answers I hired 5 doctors online overseas for $10 each and sent them all the same email about my symptoms. One of the doctors told me it sounded like I had eosinophilic esophagitis. Eosinophilic what? I spent all night searching the web and reading about this condition and knew I had found the answer to my lifelong struggle.

This disorder is just now coming to light and being researched. Many physicians have barely heard about EoE or other eosinophilic disorders let alone know how to treat them effectively. I know there are families out there with questions and who are struggling and looking for answers. I created this website to provide a free and open community for the discussion of all eosinophilic disorders. By communicating with others we can learn and help each other better cope with these complicated disorders. Please join the free Eosinophilic Esophagitis Forum to ask questions or simply help others who have questions. I’d love to hear your story. RC
